Sigl, McDonough, Zerzan and Nedeau pick up USTFCCCA honors

NEW ORLEANS - Wisconsin-Platteville's Tyler Sigl and Willamette's Sarah Zerzan became national champions on Saturday as they bested the NCAA Division III cross country championship field.

Sigl, a three-time Midwest region champ, picked up his first NCAA championship and became only the 13th runner in NCAA Division III history to earn four All-American awards.

Willamette's Zerzan successfully defended her 2006 title with her win on Saturday. The San Carlos, Calif. native finished her career with two NCAA titles, three West region championships and two Northwest Conference titles. With the win Zerzan became the third woman in NCAA Division III cross country history to repeat as the champion.

Sigl and Zerzan were named the 2007 USTFCCCA Male and Female Athletes of the Year for cross country which was announced today by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

New York University and Amherst College were the 2007 men's and women's team champions. Coaches Nick McDonough of NYU and Erik Nedeau of Amherst were named the 2007 USTFCCCA Men's and Women's Coaches of the Year.

It was decided that the Athlete and Coach of the Year honors would go to the individual race champion and to the coach of the winning team.

The USTFCCCA also announced the All-American teams from Saturday's meet. The top 35 men and top 35 women received All-American honors.
