Amherst continues to justify top ranking in Division III women's poll

NEW ORLEANS - With its third consecutive victory of the young season, Amherst's women continue to lead the pack in the Division III women's cross country rankings.

The Lord Jeffs remain the top-ranked team in the poll released today by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, followed by Calvin College, Washington University (Mo.), Luther College, SUNY Geneseo, Williams College, Plattsburgh State, Case Western Reserve, Wisconsin-Eau Claire and Dickinson College.

Amherst received seven of the eight first-place votes in this week's rankings. Second-ranked Calvin received the remaining first-place vote.

Amherst finished first against a strong field at the Purple Valley Classic, scoring 48 points to edge seventh-ranked Plattsburgh State by two points. Sixth-ranked Williams finished third. Defending NCAA champion Middlebury was fourth.

Plattsburgh State's Toni Wiszowaty finished 12 seconds in front of Amherst's Elise Tropiano at the Purple Valley Classic.

This year's NCAA Division III Women's Cross Country Championships will be held Nov. 17 in Northfield, Minn.

The Division III women's cross country rankings are determined by a committee comprised of women's coaches representing the eight different regions of the country. The men and women have different representatives on the ranking committees.

Calvin is ranked No. 1 in the Division III men's poll.
