NEW ORLEANS - The Amherst College Lord Jeffs are the 2007 NCAA Division III USTFCCCA Women's All-Academic Cross Country Team of the Year, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced today. Amherst avenged last year's runner-up finish at the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships to win the 2007 title.
Amherst also won the New England Regional cross country title and the New England Small College Athletic Conference cross country title. The regional and national titles were the first for the program. Off the track, the Lord Jeffs maintained a team cumulative 3.64 GPA.
"This award represents everything that running and being at Amherst is about for us," head coach Erik Nedeau said. "Our kids are extremely dedicated in the classroom and they carry that mindset onto the course each and every day. We are extremely proud of our runners for the way they perform on race day, and this award is equally as important and impressive."
Hamline University had the highest overall team grade point average (3.74).
An unbelievable total of 143 Division III women's programs received the USTFCCCA's All-Academic Team honors this year compared to 112 schools from last season. Just over a third of all Division III institutions (390) who sponsor women's cross country received the honor. In addition, 30 of the 32 teams in the championship field at this year's NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships were named USTFCCCA All-Academic Teams.
For a team to be considered for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team award, they must have competed and compiled a team score at an NCAA Regional Meet. The team must also have a minimum 3.10 team cumulative grade point average.
