NEW ORLEANS - Last year's NCAA Division II Outdoor National Champion, Abilene Christian, seems to be heading in the right direction for 2008 as the Wildcats find themselves atop of the men's USTFCCCA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Coaches Power Rankings, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced Thursday morning.

ACU, with 22 individual and one relay team already qualified for next month's national championships, picked up 343.76 points in the power rankings. The Wildcats have been led by Camille Vandendriessche who was named last week's Lone Star Conference Men's Field Athlete of the Week. Vandendriessche competed with the rest of the ACU team in Austin at the Texas Relays.

The defending Division II decathlon national champion took over the national lead at the Texas Relays scoring 7,559 points over the two day event. His second ay total of 3,902 points was a new Abilene Christian record. ACU's 4x400-meter relay team also qualified in impressive fashion in Austin, finishing fifth with a Division II automatic time of three minutes, 8.04 seconds.

Following ACU this week is Pittsburg State with 294.92 points. The Gorillas won last weekend's Fort Hays State quadrangular with nine individual event winners. PSU defeated Chadron State 113.5 to 47.5, No. 9 Fort Hays State 101 to 85 and No. 14 Nebraska-Kearney 99 to 80.

Coming in at No. 3 this week is the University of Central Missouri with 291.46 points. Angelo State University (291.40) and Lock Haven University (288.79) closely follow the Mules at Nos. 4 and 5 respectively.

Starting the bottom half of the top ten this week is the Tritons of UC-San Diego at No. 6, followed by Kutztown University at No. 7. Humboldt State University, Fort Hays State and Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville complete the top ten in the men's power rankings.
