NEW ORLEANS - It's no wonder a track team coached by a former thrower would have a stable of good throwers. That's exactly what Ashland University head coach Jud Logan has with both his men's and women's squads. The Ashland University women are ranked number one in the latest women's USTFCCCA Division II Coaches Power Rankings poll which was released this morning by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. And in similar fashion, just as the men's team, they Eagles are led by a strong contingent of throwers as freshman Tara Cooper leads all of Division II in the 20-lb weight throw with a toss of 63'2 ¼". Her teammate, senior Jennifer Tinney, is ranked second in the shot put (49'11"). The Eagles have 241.65 power points this week, just under a 35 point difference between Ashland and second-ranked Missouri Southern State (207.83). MSSU's Jessica Selby-Tallman leads the Division II nation with a 51'8 ¼" effort in the shot put, while teammate Kimi Shank ranks second in the 5000 meters. Hillsdale College, Lewis University and Shippensburg University complete the top five teams in the women's poll. Rounding out the top ten women's teams are fellow GLIAC conference members sixth-ranked Grand Valley State (199.43) and seventh-ranked Saginaw Valley State (198.00). Following SVSU is eighth-ranked Slippery Rock University (197.94), University of Mary (196.23) and Adams State College (193.95). The 2008 NCAA Division II Indoor National Championships will be held March 14-15 at Myers Field House on the campus of Minnesota State University in Mankato, Minn. Ashland University is the top-ranked men's team. For more information on this week's rankings visit, www.ustfccca.org. The 2008 Women's USTFCCCA Division II Coaches Power Rankings
