NEW ORLEANS - Top-ranked Oregon prepares to defend its title at the Pacific-10 Championships as the top Division I teams head to their conference meets this weekend. Oregon, the top-rated team in this week's U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association poll, will be challenged Saturday by eighth-ranked California, No. 14 Stanford, No. 19 UCLA and 25th-ranked Arizona State. The Pac-10 Championships will be held in Corvallis, Ore. Second-ranked Northern Arizona is favored at the Big Sky Championships in Missoula, Mont., as is third-ranked UTEP at the Conference USA Championships in Santa Teresa, N.M. Northern Arizona and UTEP won separate races at the Pre-Nationals on Oct. 13 in Terre Haute, Ind. Fourth-ranked Iona is expected to claim its 17th consecutive Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championship Friday at Van Cortlandt Park in New York City. Defending NCAA men's champion Colorado, ranked fifth nationally, competes at the Big 12 Conference Championships Friday in Lubbock, Texas. The Buffaloes will be challenged by No. 14 Texas and No. 18 Oklahoma State. Sunday's Big Ten Championships in Columbus, Ohio, matches fifth-ranked Wisconsin against No. 10 Michigan. The USTFCCCA Division I polls remained the same this week since there was limited competition nationally as teams rested for the upcoming conference, regional and national championships. The NCAA Championships will be held Nov. 20 at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute. The voting panel for the USTFCCCA Division I men's poll consists of nine elected regional representatives and four at-large members of the USTFCCCA. The rankings are compiled by Don Kopriva.
