NEW ORLEANS - The Texas A&M Men's Track and Field team jumped 15 spots in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association's (USTFCCCA) Division I Outdoor Track and Field Preseason Rankings to claim the No. 1 spot in this week's Rankings.

At the Texas Relays on April 5, the 4x100m relay team used a time of 38.90, just shy of LSU's 38.74, to earn second place in the event. The time is the sixth-best in school history, and it was the first time that an Aggie 4x100m team has finished in less than 39 seconds since 2006.

One week prior, at the FSU Relays, the same 4x100m team defeated the defending champion Florida State Seminoles on their home track, finishing with a meet record time of 39.17 seconds. The time fell just .02 seconds short of the facility record, set in 1984.

The unit, consisting of senior Richard Adu-Bobie, freshman Gerald Phiri, junior Chris Dykes, and junior Justin Oliver, were named Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week as a result of their performance.

At the same event, the 4x400m squad won in impressive fashion, finishing with a time of 3:04.09, more than three seconds ahead of the second and third place finishers. The 4x400m unit is currently ranked third on the world list.

The Aggies will resume action on April 11-12, when they head to Los Angeles, Calif. for the UCLA Invitational.

Joining the Aggies (257.54 points) in the top-five are Florida (249.43), UCLA (246.32), LSU (230.40), and UTEP (184.99). UTEP was ranked No. 24 in the preseason poll, but used a strong team performance at the Texas Relays to climb 19 spots in this week's rankings.

Florida State, the No. 1 team in the Preseason Rankings, is sixth in the current poll with 165.93 points. Arizona State (150.97) moved up one spot to seventh place. BYU (150.64), Alabama (144.40) and Mississippi State (142.87), none of which were in the Top 25 of the Preseason Rankings, conclude the top-10.

The 2008 USTFCCCA Division I Rankings are released on Wednesdays during the outdoor season. The rankings are compiled by Tom Lewis, assistant sports information director at Missouri.

The 2008 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships will be held June 11-14th, 2008 in Des Moines, Iowa.

Arizona State is this week's top-ranked women's team.
