April 9, 2008 pre> Complete National Rankings | View Men's Release NEW ORLEANS - The Arizona State University Women's Track and Field team sits atop the first week of the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association's (USTFCCCA) Division I Outdoor Track and Field Rankings of 2008. After taking home the NCAA Women's Indoor Title in March, the Sun Devils have continued their success in the early part of the outdoor season. Last weekend at the Jim Click Shootout in Tucson, Ariz., the women claimed 13 NCAA Regional qualifying marks, led by a pair of sprint victories by junior Charonda Williams' in the 100m (11.55) and 200m (23.48) dash. Senior Jacquelyn Johnson, ranked No. 1 in the heptathlon, broke an 18-year school record in her first outdoor multi of the season by scoring 6,143 points and automatically qualifying for the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Johnson's toss of 152-4 (46.45m) in the javelin also broke the Arizona State mark which she had previously set a week earlier. Sun Devil junior Sarah Stevens was also impressive in the Shootout, claiming victories in both the discus (182-9; 55.71m) and hammer throw (215-7; 65.73m). Both of the throws were season-bests for Stevens, and she currently is ranked second and third in the events, respectively. Arizona State currently has seven athletes ranked inside the top-10 nationally in 10 different events. The team will be in action April 11-12 when it hosts the Sun Angel Track Classic in Tempe, Ariz. The Sun Devils (317.50 points) are joined in the top-five Rankings by Louisiana State University (271.09), Texas A&M (252.08), Southern Cal (217.56) and Florida (201.79). The LSU Tigers, who finished second at the NCAA Indoor meet and were ranked No. 1 in the preseason standings, are led by Senior Kelly-Ann Baptiste and her No. 1 ranking in the 100m dash (11.06). The Tigers also have the No. 1 ranking in the 4x400 (3:29.72) and are second in the 4x100 (43.10). LSU will be hosting the LSU Combined Events and the LSU Invitational April 10-12 at Bernie Moore Stadium in Baton Rouge, La. Oregon (182.40) jumped 12 spots in the ranking, climbing to No. 6. Miami (Fla.) (178.77), Florida State (174.82), Baylor (150.27) and Virginia Tech (147.91) round out the top-10. The 2008 USTFCCCA Division I Rankings are released on Wednesdays during the outdoor season. The rankings are compiled by Tom Lewis, assistant sports information director at Missouri. The 2008 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships will be held June 11-14th, 2008 in Des Moines, Iowa. Texas A&M is this week's top-ranked men's team.
