NEW ORLEANS - The LSU Lady Tigers open up the outdoor campaign ranked as the top team in the women's USTFCCCA Division I Preseason Outdoor Track and Field National Rankings, the U.S Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced this afternoon.

The Lady Tigers have a strong contingent of sprinters and hurdlers which should keep them at the top of the rankings all year long. LSU finished second at last year's outdoor national championships.

Coming in at No. 2 in the preseason rankings is Arizona State. The Sun Devils have won three straight national track and field titles ('07 indoor/'07 outdoor and '08 indoor) and will be looking to make it four-in-a-row in June. Following the Sun Devils this week is third-ranked Virginia Tech. The Hokies finished 21st at the national meet in 2007.

Fourth-ranked Texas A&M and fifth-ranked Southern California complete the women's top five.

UCLA begins the next five at No. 6 this week, with BYU coming in at No. 7.

Penn State and Stanford follow the Cougars at Nos. 8 and 9 respectively, followed by Michigan who rounds out the top ten in the women's rankings.

The 2008 USTFCCCA Division I Rankings are released on Wednesdays during the outdoor season. The rankings are compiled by Tom Lewis, assistant sports information director at Missouri.

The 2008 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships will be held June 11-14th, 2008 in Des Moines, Iowa.

Florida State is this week's top-ranked men's team.
