NEW ORLEANS - The Stanford Cardinal women's cross country team was one of the more dominant teams in the country during the 2007 cross country season both on and off the course. The Cardinal women won every major race they competed in this season, including their third straight NCAA Division I Women's Cross Country Championship.
Stanford can add another piece of hardware to their collection as they have been named the 2007 NCAA Division I USTFCCCA Women's All-Academic Cross Country Team of the Year, announced today by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Stanford also won the award in 2006. This year, they carry a cumulative team grade point average of 3.47.
"This is a great honor for our team and for Stanford University," head coach Peter Tegen Said. "I am very proud to work with such an exceptionally dedicated group on a daily basis."
Throughout the 2007 cross country season, the Cardinal never wavered from the top spot in the USTFCCCA cross country rankings. As a result of their accomplishments this year, their coach, Peter Tegen, was named the 2007 USTFCCCA Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year.
In all, 158 Division I women's programs received the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team honor. There are 325 teams in Division I that sponsor women's cross country. Of the 158 teams on the list, 35 of them had team GPAs over 3.50. South Florida, from the Big East Conference, led all schools with a team GPA of 3.78.
Thirty-one teams competed at the NCAA Championships this past November and of those 31, an unprecedented 26 teams received the All-Academic Team award, an astonishing 84 percent of the field. This included eight teams in the top ten.
The Big 12 Conference and the Atlantic Coast Conference had the most programs on the All-Academic Team list with ten apiece. The Big East Conference, Big Ten Conference and the Missouri Valley Conference each had nine teams on the list.
For a team to be considered for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team award, they must have competed and compiled a team score at an NCAA Regional Meet. The team must also have a minimum 3.00 team cumulative grade point average.
