NEW ORLEANS - For the second year in a row, the Gaels of Iona College have been named the NCAA Division I USTFCCCA Men's Cross Country All-Academic Team of the Year, the association announced today. Iona had a team cumulative GPA of 3.00.
"This is the second straight year we have earned this honor and it is a testament to the outstanding job that our kids do, not only on the course, but also in the classroom," said head coach Mick Byrne. "We are extremely proud of them for their hard work as both a student and an athlete."
The Gaels finished second at the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships this past November to team champion Oregon. The Ducks scored 85 points to Iona's 113. The Gaels won the Northeast Regional and the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference titles prior to their runner-up finish at the NCAA meet.
Belmont University of the Atlantic Sun Conference had the highest overall team grade point average with a 3.57. Overall, 98 men's Division I programs received the USTFCCCA's academic honor, which is just under a third of all Division schools that sponsor men's cross country (299). The numbers at this year's NCAA Championships were also impressive: 16 of the 31 teams in the field received the All-Academic Team award.
The Atlantic Coast Conference, the Big East Conference, and the Southeastern Conference each had seven schools represented on the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team list. The Big Ten Conference, the Missouri Valley Conference, and the Ivy League were represented with six teams on the list.
For a team to be considered for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team award, they must have competed and compiled a team score at an NCAA Regional Meet. The team must also have a minimum 3.00 team cumulative grade point average.
