Stanford's national champions and Colorado standout Jenny Barringer ran and studied their way to the head of the class on the NCAA Division I All-Academic Women's Cross Country Team.
Stanford is the 2006 NCAA Division I All-Academic Women's Cross Country Team of the Year, the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced Thursday. Barringer, a Colorado sophomore who finished second at the NCAA Championships, is the All-Academic Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Year.
Stanford won its second straight NCAA cross country championship in November. In the classroom, the Cardinal had a cumulative team grade point average of 3.470.
Stanford's team roster featured Lindsay Allen, Shannon Bergstedt, Lauren Centrowitz, Lindsay Flacks, Alicia Follmar, Katie Harrington, Arianna Lambie, Mary Liz McCurdy, Teresa McWalters, Kate Niehaus, Madeleine O'Meara, Kaylin Pennington, Leah Sawyer, Anne St. Geme, Amanda Trotter, Katy Trotter and Kelsey Walker.
Peter Tegen coached Stanford to its national championship. He was named the national coach of the year, receiving the USTFCCCA award named in his honor.
The All-Academic Cross Country Team of the Year is awarded to the highest-finishing school at the NCAA Championships that meets All-Academic team qualifications (a minimum 3.00 cumulative GPA during the 2006 fall term).
An amazing total of 145 teams received Division I Women's All-Academic Cross Country Team honors for the 2006 season. To be honored as an All-Academic Team, teams were required to compete in an NCAA regional meet and have at least a cumulative GPA of 3.0.
BYU had the highest team GPA of any of the All-Academic women's teams - 3.730.
Barringer, a political science major from Oviedo, Fla., had a sparkling 3.573 GPA through the fall term. Barringer placed second at the NCAA Division I Women's Cross Country Championships in Terre Haute, trailing only Texas Tech's Sally Kipyego
To earn All-Academic individual honors, runners were required to have at least a cumulative GPA of 3.25. Seventy-six individuals earned All-Academic honors for the 2006 cross country season.
In addition to claiming team honors, Stanford had five runners - Lambie, McWalters, Flacks, Katy Trotter and Amanda Trotter - earn All-Academic individual designation.
Arkansas was the only other Division I women's team to have five runners earn All-Academic individual honors. The Razorbacks finished fifth at the 2006 NCAA Division I Women's Cross Country Championships.
Iona is the NCAA Division I All-Academic Men's Cross Country Team of the Year. Stanford's Neftalem Araia is the Division I All-Academic Men's Athlete of the Year.
