NEW ORLEANS – With an already impressive performance résumé, the top-ranked LSU Lady Tigers showcased more talent and added a few more records to their repertoire over the weekend. Kelly Baptiste and LaTavia Thomas broke two Armory Track records this past weekend at the New Balance Collegiate Invite to lead the Purple and Gold. Baptiste ran a blistering 7.17 seconds in the 60-meter dash and teammate Thomas crossed the tape in the 800-meters with a time of 2 minutes, 4.66 seconds. Both times lead the NCAA as LSU remains the number one team in this week’s USTFCCCA Division I women’s indoor track and field rankings, released today by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. LSU won the New Balance Collegiate Invite with a team total score of 104 points, besting second place and fourth-ranked Texas A&M who scored 62 points on the weekend. LSU and Tennessee remain the top two teams this week. Michigan moved up three spots this week to No. 3 on the heels of record setting performances by both their distance medley relay and by junior Tiffany Ofili. Michigan’s DMR set a new facility record at the Meyo Invitational running an NCAA-leading time of 11:01.51. Ofili bested her previous school record of 8.05 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles on Saturday with a time of 8.04 seconds, which is also the best time in the NCAA in the event. Alyson Kohlmeier also moved into the NCAA rankings this week after she posted an NCAA provisional qualifying time in the 5000-meter run (16:16.73). Stanford made biggest advance me by moving up to No. 5 in this week’s rankings. Stanford is led by seniors Erica McLain and Arianna Lambie. McLain is ranked number one in the long jump (21’3 ½”) and number two in the triple jump (44’11 ¾”). Lambie is currently the top ranked 3000-meter runner (9:05.32).
No. 6 Arizona State, No. 8 Minnesota and No. 10 Penn State all moved into the top ten this week. LSU, Tennessee, and Michigan will get a chance to square off against each other this weekend as all three teams head to Fayetteville, Arkansas for the Tyson Invitational. Fourth-ranked Texas A&M will head to Seattle for the Husky Invite while fifth-ranked Stanford will split this weekend between Seattle and Fayetteville. The 2008 USTFCCCA Division I Rankings are released on Wednesdays during the indoor season. The rankings are compiled by Tom Lewis, assistant sports information director at Missouri. The 2008 NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships will be held March 14-15 in Fayetteville, Ark. Tennessee is this week’s top-ranked men’s team.
