NEW ORLEANS - With just over five weeks remaining in the 2008 indoor track and field season several teams have started to make a strong push for number one. The University of Tennessee men become the newest number one on the block as they registered 95.85 points in this week's rankings; just over four points ahead of Southeastern Conference rival Florida (91.32 points) in the rankings released today by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. The Volunteers are led by senior sprinters Rubin Williams and Evander Wells who are one-two in the 200-meters. The Florida Gators moved up nine spots in the rankings this week on the strength of R.J. Anderson's mark of 46.87s in the 400m and Willie Perry's time in the 200m (21.15s). Following Tennessee and Florida is Arkansas at No. 3 with 88.82 points. UCLA comes in at No. 4 this week, entering the top ten for the first time in 2008 with BYU completing the top five. Boise State, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas Tech and Kentucky are the next five in the top ten. No. 5 BYU, No. 8 Oregon and No. 10 Kentucky all entered the top ten this week. Northern Iowa debuted this week at No. 19 as did No. 25 Cal-State Northridge. UNI's Raven Cepeda and Mat Clark lead the way for Northern Iowa. Cepeda has the best mark in the heptathlon this year with 5,906 points while teammate Clark has the fourth best mark in the heptathlon with 5,560 points. The 2008 USTFCCCA Division I Rankings are released on Wednesday's during the indoor season. The rankings are compiled by Tom Lewis, assistant sports information director at Missouri. The 2008 NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships will be held March 14-15 in Fayetteville, Ark. LSU is No. 1 in this week's Division I women's rankings.
