NEW ORLEANS - With its strong mix of middle-distance runners and jumpers, Arkansas is the top-ranked team in the Division I men's indoor track and field rankings released today by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. In the first regular-season rankings of 2008, Arkansas is followed in the top 10 by Tennessee, Oklahoma, Boise State, Texas Tech, Nebraska, Liberty, Baylor, Clemson and LSU. Rounding out the top 20 are Florida, Arizona, BYU, Auburn, Idaho, South Carolina, Princeton, La Salle, Arizona State and Oral Roberts. The 2008 USTFCCCA Division I Rankings are compiled strictly from the NCAA descending order lists and will be released each Wednesday for both the indoor and outdoor seasons. Rankings are compiled by Tom Lewis, assistant sports information director at Missouri. Under USTFCCCA Hall of Fame coach John McDonnell, Arkansas has won a record 19 NCAA men's indoor track and field championships. Its most recent national title came in 2006. The 2008 NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships will be held March 14-15 in Fayetteville, Ark. Arkansas is ranked first in the country in the men's distance medley with a time of 9 minutes, 38.37 seconds. Arkansas junior Alex McClary has the second-fastest time in the 800 meters at 1:49.28. Alain Bailey and Nikosinza Balumbu are ranked fourth and fifth in the long and triple jumps, respectively. Second-ranked Tennessee is strong in the sprints and hurdles. Ruben Williams has the country's top clocking in the 200 meters (20.76) and the fourth-fastest time in the 60 (6.65). Third-ranked Oklahoma is led by triple jumper Shardae Boutte (52-11¼, second nationally) and its distance medley team (9:42.35, also second nationally).
